A versatile dual-purpose chicken with white feathers and distinctive blue legs
American Bresse chickens are a dual-purpose breed valued for meat production and a useful supply of cream to light brown eggs. Active foragers with a distinctive white, red, and blue appearance, they benefit from room to roam and well-ventilated housing.
American Bresse are U.S.-raised chickens derived from French Bresse stock, known for their dual-purpose potential. They are not the same as France’s protected Bresse poultry designation, which requires specific geographic and production standards. Growth, laying, and adult size vary with breeding line and management.
Hens produce medium to large cream or light brown eggs, with a reasonable planning range of 180–250 eggs per year. Birds are commonly calm and approachable with regular handling, though they remain active and individual temperaments vary. Some hens become broody.
For Central Florida flocks, provide reliable shade, fresh water, and generous airflow during hot, humid weather. American Bresse enjoy foraging but can adapt to a spacious, enriched run. Secure housing and predator protection remain important whether birds range freely or stay in a fenced enclosure.
