Active Italian layers with striking mottled plumage
Ancona chickens are lively, alert birds known for their black-and-white mottled feathers and steady production of white eggs. These excellent foragers suit keepers who enjoy active chickens rather than a quiet, cuddly flock.
Originating in Italy, the Ancona is a lightweight Mediterranean chicken developed primarily for egg production. Its glossy black feathers have white tips, creating a distinctive mottled pattern. Both single-comb and rose-comb varieties exist.
Hens produce roughly 180-250 white eggs per year under suitable management and rarely become broody. Laying onset and annual output vary with strain, nutrition, daylight, and season; production normally declines during molt and with age.
Anconas are energetic, watchful, and capable flyers. They thrive with room to explore and forage, but need predator-protected housing and secure fencing or a covered run. They can adapt to confinement when given adequate space and enrichment, though small, bare pens are a poor fit.
Their light build makes them a reasonable choice for Central Florida's heat, provided they have shade, airflow, and constant access to clean water. They can also manage cool weather with dry, sheltered housing, but large single combs are vulnerable to frostbite. Patient handling helps build trust, although this breed is not the strongest choice for families seeking lap chickens.
