A classic dual-purpose chicken with bold barring and a calm disposition

Barred Rocks are the black-and-white barred variety of the Plymouth Rock breed, valued for brown eggs and a sturdy, dual-purpose build. Their calm, friendly nature makes them a popular choice for beginners and backyard flocks.

The Barred Rock is a heritage American chicken and a variety of the Plymouth Rock breed. Recognizable by its black-and-white barred feathers, single red comb, and yellow legs, it combines useful egg production with a substantial body size.

Hens commonly produce 200–280 large brown eggs per year, with laying beginning around 20–24 weeks. Timing and production vary with genetics, nutrition, daylight, and management; laying also slows during molts and as hens age.

Barred Rocks tend to be calm, curious, and manageable, although individual birds—and especially roosters—vary in temperament. They forage well and adapt to a secure coop and run when given adequate space and enrichment. Some hens become broody, but dependable natural incubation should not be assumed.

For Central Florida flocks, their heavier build calls for careful summer management. Provide reliable shade, abundant fresh water, and strong ventilation. Their cold hardiness does not eliminate the need for dry shelter or protection of exposed combs during freezing weather.
