A gentle, golden dual-purpose chicken
Buff Orpingtons are large, fluffy chickens valued for their calm temperament and brown eggs. Their gentle nature makes them a popular backyard choice, though their dense feathering calls for extra attention to shade and ventilation in Central Florida.
Buff Orpingtons are the golden-colored variety of the English Orpington breed. These broad-bodied, heavily feathered chickens were developed for both eggs and meat and are widely appreciated for their calm, approachable disposition.
Hens produce large brown eggs, with a reasonable breed expectation of 180–250 eggs per year. Laying commonly begins at 20–28 weeks, depending on diet, season and individual development. Hens can become broody, temporarily pausing egg production while attempting to hatch a clutch.
Their substantial bodies and dense plumage suit cool weather better than hot, humid conditions. In Central Florida, provide reliable shade, generous airflow and constant access to fresh water. Buff Orpingtons adapt well to a roomy enclosed run and enjoy foraging, but their gentle temperament can leave them vulnerable to bullying in assertive mixed flocks.
