Golden-laced beauty with dependable dual-purpose appeal
Golden Laced Wyandottes are sturdy, dual-purpose chickens known for their rich golden feathers edged in black and their brown eggs. Their calm but sometimes assertive temperament suits many backyard flocks, though Central Florida’s heat calls for shade, airflow, and reliable access to fresh water.
The Golden Laced Wyandotte is a color variety of the American Wyandotte breed, recognized for its broad, rounded body, rose comb, and striking black-edged golden plumage. Mature hens weigh around 6.5 pounds, while roosters reach around 8.5 pounds, making them a traditional dual-purpose choice for eggs and meat.
Hens commonly produce 180–240 brown eggs per year, with laying beginning around 20–28 weeks. Egg size is medium to large. Production varies with breeding line, nutrition, daylight, age, and weather. Some hens become broody and pause laying while attempting to hatch eggs.
Wyandottes are often calm and manageable, but friendliness varies by individual and handling. They tolerate confinement with adequate space and also enjoy foraging. Their dense feathering provides good cold tolerance but makes heat management important in Central Florida: provide shaded outdoor areas, a well-ventilated coop, and fresh drinking water.
