An upright, active duck with classic mallard-pattern coloring

Gray Runner ducks are the mallard-patterned variety of the Indian Runner, known for their slim bodies and upright stance. These lightweight ducks are active foragers and useful egg layers, though they can be more watchful and easily startled than calmer duck breeds.

The Gray Runner is a color variety of the Indian Runner duck, not a separate breed. Its distinctive upright posture and slender build give it a nearly vertical silhouette. Gray refers to mallard-style coloring rather than solid gray plumage: ducks have mottled brown feathers, while mature drakes develop a green head, chestnut breast, and gray body.

Runners are primarily kept for eggs and foraging rather than meat. Egg production and the timing of first lay vary with breeding line, nutrition, season, and daylight. Eggs are commonly white, although pale green shells can occur, and broodiness is low.

For Central Florida, provide reliable shade, ventilation, and fresh drinking water deep enough for bill and nostril cleaning. These energetic ducks benefit from room to explore, secure nighttime housing, and well-drained areas around water stations. Gentle, consistent handling helps them become comfortable around people, but they are not usually a cuddly breed.
