A heavyweight white duck with a calm disposition
Jumbo Pekins are large, white domestic ducks developed primarily for meat production. Their calm disposition and useful egg production can also make them a practical choice for backyard keepers with room for a heavyweight duck.
Jumbo Pekin refers to larger, meat-oriented strains of the Pekin duck rather than a separate standardized breed. These ducks have white plumage, orange bills and feet, and broad, heavy bodies. Mature size varies by breeding line, sex, feeding, and management.
Females lay large to extra-large white eggs, though production varies by strain and season. Jumbo Pekins are not especially reliable brooders, so natural hatching should not be assumed. They are usually calm and approachable with gentle handling, but their size calls for secure footing and careful support when lifted.
In Central Florida, provide generous shade, ventilation, and dependable fresh drinking water. Water must be deep enough for ducks to submerge their bills and clean their nostrils; a swimming pond is not essential. Dry bedding, good drainage, predator-resistant housing, and space to move comfortably are particularly important for these heavy birds.
