Gentle, lavender-gray chickens for eggs and backyard companionship
Lavender Orpingtons are a color variety of the Orpington breed, known for soft lavender-gray plumage, a calm disposition, and brown eggs. These large, fluffy chickens suit many backyard flocks but need extra attention to shade and ventilation in Central Florida’s heat.
Lavender Orpingtons combine the Orpington’s broad, rounded build with pale lavender-gray feathers. They are dual-purpose chickens valued for their manageable temperament and moderate production of medium-to-large brown eggs. Egg output and maturity vary with breeding line, nutrition, season, and individual bird.
Hens can become broody, sometimes pausing egg production while trying to hatch a clutch. Their calm nature makes them a good option for beginners and families, though friendliness depends on handling and individual temperament. They do best with other gentle chickens and may be bullied by more assertive flockmates.
Their dense plumage provides good cold-weather protection but makes hot, humid conditions more challenging. In Central Florida, provide dependable shade, strong airflow, plentiful fresh water, and uncrowded housing. Secure outdoor space allows them to scratch and forage, while low, sturdy roosts accommodate their heavy bodies.
