Quiet, capable foragers with strong brooding instincts
Muscovy ducks are distinctive, relatively quiet poultry valued for meat, foraging ability, and devoted mothering. Their seasonal egg production and strong tendency to brood make them better suited to a multipurpose flock than an egg-focused setup.
Muscovies are a separate species from the mallard-derived ducks common in backyard flocks. They have red facial caruncles, strong claws, and plumage in several colors and patterns. Drakes are substantially larger than females, and their soft hisses and trills replace the familiar loud quacking of many domestic ducks.
Females lay white to cream eggs in seasonal clutches and readily become broody. Annual output varies with strain, daylight, nutrition, and time spent nesting or raising ducklings. Muscovy eggs take around 35 days to hatch, longer than most domestic duck eggs.
For Central Florida housing, prioritize shade, ventilation, clean drinking water deep enough to submerge the bill and clear the nostrils, and dry bedding. Muscovies forage actively and may perch or fly, especially females, so secure fencing alone may not contain them. Provide predator-resistant nighttime shelter and supervise breeding-season interactions, particularly around children, smaller birds, and chickens.
