Upright, active laying ducks in two distinctive color varieties
Penciled and Fawn & White are color varieties of the Runner duck, known for its upright stance, energetic foraging, and egg-laying ability. These lightweight ducks suit keepers who can provide secure outdoor space, gentle handling, and dependable access to clean water.
Runner ducks have a tall, slender body and an upright, almost penguin-like carriage. Penciled birds feature intricate brown patterning, while Fawn & White birds have soft tan areas contrasted with white plumage. Both varieties share the Runner’s active nature and strong interest in exploring for insects and other small foods.
Runners are primarily laying ducks rather than meat birds. Females can produce roughly 150–250 eggs annually, with substantial variation by breeding line, age, nutrition, and season. Eggs are commonly white, though some birds lay pale green or blue-green eggs. Broodiness is low, so natural hatching should not be assumed.
For Central Florida conditions, provide shade, ventilation, clean drinking water, and well-drained resting areas. Drinking water should be deep enough for ducks to submerge their bills and clean their nostrils. Secure nighttime housing and a predator-resistant outdoor area are important; these alert ducks may become comfortable with patient handling but are not naturally cuddly pets.
