A calm, heavyweight duck with classic mallard coloring

Rouen ducks are large domestic ducks valued for meat, ornamental appeal, and a modest supply of eggs. Their mallard-like coloring and calm disposition make them an appealing choice for backyard flocks with room to roam.

Rouens are a French domestic duck breed known for their substantial size and mallard-like plumage. Production-type birds are lighter and more active than the heavier exhibition type, which has a deep body and prominent keel. Rouens are primarily a meat and ornamental breed rather than a high-output laying duck.

Females lay large eggs, most commonly white or cream, with occasional pale green tinting. Egg production and the age at first lay vary with breeding line, season, nutrition, and management; heavier exhibition birds may lay fewer eggs than production-type Rouens.

Their calm nature can suit beginners and families, though individual birds vary and children should handle them gently under supervision. In Central Florida, provide dependable shade, airflow, fresh drinking water deep enough to submerge the head, and dry, well-drained shelter. Secure nighttime housing and supervised or predator-protected outdoor access are important.
