ASSORTED COLORS (Black, Blue, Buff, Gray, Partridge, Red, and White) Fluffy, gentle chickens with strong mothering instincts
Silkies are small ornamental chickens known for their soft, hairlike feathers, gentle disposition, and frequent broodiness. They lay small cream-colored to tinted eggs and need dry shelter, predator protection, and relief from Central Florida’s heat and humidity.
Silkies stand out with fluffy plumage, crested heads, feathered legs, dark skin, and five toes on each foot. Bearded and non-bearded varieties occur in several colors. The weights listed here reflect the small, bantam-sized birds commonly kept in the United States; size varies by strain.
Their main appeal is as companion, exhibition, and broody birds rather than high-production layers. Hens produce small cream-colored to lightly tinted eggs, with laying interrupted by frequent broody periods. Many Silkies readily sit on eggs, though individual mothering behavior varies.
Their gentle nature makes them appealing for beginners and families, but they need some extra housing care. Provide shade, plentiful drinking water, and strong ventilation for Central Florida summers, along with a dry, secure coop and covered outdoor space. Their feathers offer poor protection when wet, and their limited flight makes low roosts and easy-access nest boxes helpful. Keep them with gentle flockmates and watch for bullying or crests that obstruct vision.
