Silver-laced beauty with dependable dual-purpose appeal
Silver Laced Wyandottes are sturdy, dual-purpose chickens known for their silver-white feathers edged in black and steady brown egg production. Their calm, confident nature suits many backyard flocks, though their dense plumage calls for extra attention during Central Florida’s hot, humid weather.
The Silver Laced Wyandotte is the original color variety of the American Wyandotte breed. Its rounded body, rose comb, yellow legs, and distinctive black-edged silver-white feathers make it an attractive, practical backyard chicken.
Hens produce roughly 180-240 brown eggs per year, with laying commonly beginning around 20-28 weeks. Eggs are medium to large, and production varies with genetics, diet, daylight, age, and management. Standard mature weights are around 6.5 pounds for hens and 8.5 pounds for roosters.
Wyandottes are usually calm and confident, but friendliness and handling tolerance vary by bird. They adapt well to a secure coop and run and also enjoy foraging. Some hens become broody, and assertive birds may dominate more timid flockmates.
Their dense feathering and small rose comb suit cold weather better than intense heat. In Central Florida, provide generous shade, strong ventilation, multiple fresh-water stations, and an uncrowded run. Avoid cramped or poorly ventilated housing, particularly during summer.
