A calm, productive duck with beautifully patterned plumage

Welsh Harlequins are light-bodied ducks valued for their egg production, attractive plumage, and generally calm temperament. They are active foragers and a practical choice for backyard flocks with secure housing, clean water, and room to explore.

Developed in Wales from Khaki Campbell ducks, the Welsh Harlequin is a light duck breed kept primarily for eggs, with some dual-purpose use. Females have pale, finely patterned plumage, while mature drakes develop darker heads and contrasting body colors. Silver and Gold varieties differ in their coloration.

Welsh Harlequin ducks can produce substantial numbers of large, mostly white eggs under suitable conditions. Laying varies with age, nutrition, daylight, and season. Some females become broody and may hatch and raise ducklings, though maternal behavior varies by individual.

Their generally calm disposition makes them appealing to beginners and families, but gentle handling and supervision around children remain important. In Central Florida, provide dependable shade, airflow, and fresh water deep enough for ducks to rinse their bills and nostrils. A swimming pond is optional; dry bedding, good drainage, and predator-secure nighttime housing are essential.
