An active heritage chicken known for rich brown, speckled eggs
Welsummers are attractive dual-purpose chickens valued for their reddish-brown eggs, often marked with darker speckles. These alert, capable foragers suit backyard flocks with room to explore, though egg color and production vary by bird and strain.
Developed in the Netherlands, the Welsummer is a medium-sized, dual-purpose breed best known for its richly colored brown eggs. Hens have warm brown plumage with golden neck feathers, while roosters display red-and-gold coloring with dark breasts and glossy tails. Both have yellow legs and a single comb.
Hens commonly produce 160-200 large eggs per year and begin laying around 20-28 weeks, depending on season, nutrition, and strain. Shells range from medium to dark reddish brown and may carry darker speckles; color can lighten as the laying cycle progresses. Broodiness is low, so Welsummers are not a dependable choice for natural hatching.
Welsummers are active, alert birds that often become friendly with regular gentle handling. They forage well and can live in a spacious enclosed run, but benefit from opportunities to scratch and explore. For Central Florida conditions, provide dependable shade, fresh water, and a well-ventilated coop; their single combs also need protection during freezing weather.
